Watercolor, Graphite, 300lb D'Arches paper, Janice Cartier, May 2010

This painting will probably be named “Source”. And surprisingly, I have decided to offer it up for sale on line as it’s finished, not hold it in reserve. It’s 22″ x 30″ , a watercolor. If you want to have right of first refusal, just drop me a line, no obligation, just I think I might want this, let me decide when it’s done. This painting should take me less than a week to complete. The paint is flowing well. These are the lightest lights. They go on first. And the ease with which they are flowing is like honey to a bear.

The artist smiles.

In fact, I will offer up all three of these next new pieces.

Yes.

Freshly painted to anyone who has not collected my work before.

To someone who is not yet on my client list.

These will be for you.

Part of the process I want at the moment is a letting go.

No waiting, no have to save this for show, have to do x, y, z…

No…just paint them and let them go to good homes.

Because…they’ve tapped into flow.

And these lightest lights have brilliant color, some I haven’t let lead before, others that I have. These are on the scale of the huge 40″ x 60″ pieces that I do, but they are done in  the simple 22″ x 30″ format. I hadn’t felt this kind of freedom in this size in awhile.

So I feel like celebrating.

They feel so pure and unobstructed. Like the large ones.

Prices? Let’s see…

The large ones are 8,000.00 and this is a quarter of that size…hm..I haven’t charged less than 2,400.00 for these in  awhile..but..it is a celebration..and you haven’t even seen them finished yet…so…

Let’s see there will be only three at the moment…

I think 1800.00 dollars each. That’s half the usual gallery price. Just these three paintings, just for this time only. It’s a way to get the impact of the large pieces in a not so large size and price. And  a way to help celebrate a breakthrough, a lightness, a successful going to the well so to speak.

So first come first serve. On line only. No galleries. No dealers. This is open to private collectors only.

You can email me at jancartier1 at gmail dot com and simply say.. “I think I might want this”..when it’s finished you’ll have to make up your mind and send in a 500.00 deposit. And then the balance plus shipping  for it to be sent Fed Ex to your door.

Hm.. I didn’t know I was going to do this when I set out to post this morning..so forgive the lack of salemanship, or polish.. I’m just happy, very happy  with how these feel and what I ‘m seeing.. and I want to share. I am not likely to be  coming at anyone  who reads or follows me with the sales template du jour.. it’s just not my style.  You would not get that in my private studio…you’re not going to get that here.

So these are going to be really fine pieces. I can feel it in my bones. They are offered to new buyers at  a very reasonable discounted price for  the time being and if they speak to you, you can own one or all of them…well..that’s the way it has always worked best in person…I  think it translates here.

Any concerns or questions…Just send me an email with the subject: “3 new paintings” .

Now.. am I really going to click publish?….

Yes, I am.

The artist smiles..

So freeing…

Lightest lights…I blame them.

Fascinating Rhythms

March 30, 2009 by Janice · 4 Comments

Fascinating RhythmsWe live in interesting times. Fascinating rhythms, just when we could have gotten real boring. As some things deconstruct on their own, others, we could actually take down ourselves. There’s real opportunity to put something else, or many something elses in their place.

Of course there always has been that opportunity. And some people do that all the time. It’s “how they roll”, as the saying goes.

Fascinating or no, artists tend to like rhythms and routines. Structure. We like to have the essentials of daily living down to a recognizable pattern. Surprising? Here’s why we do. It affords more latitude, more  ”what if” attitude in the studio. Gives us that window of percolation that we have to have.

Why do you think I always come back to this Organizing Monday post on , um , Mondays? Strength  of discipline. Sure. Organized brain. Sure. Tidy little work life? LOL…….

Okay…still chuckling.

It’s so my little artistic brain and heart won’t entirely explode and run off the tracks.

I am actually known for being organized among my colleagues. And in Santa Fe  a whole new set of people/artists got to see me be prolific because of it. But right this minute. I NEED, not want, NEED this ritual of Mondays to keep my right brain from  scampering away and leaving the left one in the dirt.

It has some textures, some lines, some experiments it wants to make. It has seen a window or two and is , oops just let me grab it…just a sec.  And it wants to chuck all the very practical and income earning things the left brain is pointing to and just run  free. Dance over paper and canvas.. construct even…tie paper in knots and paint it? What? Story board abstract little films? Who let it out again?

Here’s the real dirt…I have been looking around for awhile, and seeing the most amazing things.  I put them all in to sift and filter a bit, stuff the ideas, the what if’s in a drawer or a notebook. Well, now some of them are patting out a rhythm.  Calling out to me. Yes I know I set this up, asked for it. But I have fiscal goals too. I have to restore my income, find new collectors, new galleries. You know, earn a living?

So Mondays, are like deciding the difference between need and want. Sometimes they are remarkably similar. Sometimes one is the change  that brings the other. Now figuring out which is which, there’s the trick. But my plan has room for both. So the plan is  addressed on Mondays…but that right brain has already found a loophole. Its wriggle room/spot in the plan.

See I don’t forget you buddy, it’s right there see? And won’t that be fun. Listen. That rhythm you hear, well that’s my right brain tapping out anticipation.

Do you have a way that you channel yourself? Allow for the innovation to  work right along with what you’re working on?  I guess I am asking if you have scheduled innovation time in your plan? And if you don’t, why not?

Beauty And The Buck

dscf3008 I willfully, knowingly manipulate color , line, texture, value and form to create art and allure.  To draw you in. To make a statement. To point something out that has captured my notice. And to make sure that you see it too. I work at it. I train for it, I practice it. I constantly refine the skills. I study my place  in context of all those who came before me. I make sure it is meaningful to me, so it will be meaningful to you. I belong to an ancestry of creative souls.

I do it for money.

No, not JUST for money, but in order to have the results of  what I do, money exchanges hands. You pay me. I am a professional. Does money taint that beauty or that art?

Does art plus money equal something else?

It’s Organizing Monday here and I am organizing my week, I hope you are too. But it was an interesting weekend.  I witnessed one very heated discussion on money, intent, desire and trust. It began as a simple discussion of a simple idea. But wow, torches were lit, the villagers were storming the gates. And then the  paper was full of  artists and the economy articles, money and creativity, money, power, sex, freedom, money…historical context. Oh, and there was Opera ( It’s adapting to the changing times.) Hm, strange , money is a hot button  when mixed with certain things.

Yep, a bit of drama this weekend.

I wonder, does anyone have the notion that to be a REAL artist , one must always be poor?  Is beauty less beautiful if there are bucks involved?  Or is beauty perceived as more beautiful because there is a price on it?  It’s about desire and money  and art.  Just asking. I’d love to know your thoughts.
